Jason Edney - Planting Time

Like so many other teams the months of July and August are spent putting out Biologic seed, hanging trail cameras, hanging new sets, and giving old sets a face lift. Well I got a small window of free time and headed west to our place in Western Nebraska to do the same. Alot of people don't realize that Western Nebraska is considered a high plains desert with the annual rain fall only equaling ~17 in per year. That's not what you want when your planning your food plots! To make things even worse, with my farming schedule back in North Carolina, I had to put the seed in the ground around late July. This is a little earlier than I would like due to the moisture situation. Most years we like to wait until Mid August but that wasn't going to work this year. Well luck was on my side for once and when the last seed was put in the ground it started to rain and didn't stop for ~24 hrs! This is unheard of in Nebraska, we received a little over a inch of rain! This should be plenty of moisture to get the seeds up and on there way until late August when our chances of rain will increase!

Along with all the food plot work several days were spent hanging new sets. Every old stand was visited on the properties to make sure they survived the winter. Along with the safety check just about every stand required a little trimming. A pile of sweat and gas goes into ensuring these sets are in the proper place plus making sure you have a few shooting lanes.

One product I was impressed with was Biologic's new mineral rock (Bio Rock). The first rocks were put out during turkey season and they have been hammered since then. Every site we started back in April already needed a new rock put out! Also these mineral sites were perfect for August trail camera pics. The trail camera pics ended up showing several GREAT deer that look to have "shooter" potential this fall!

All the chips are set for this fall, now all we have to do is wait!

Good information. Our season came in August 15th so we planted our plots in May and June because when July and August comes around, the sun will usually bake the seed in the ground. The only problem with this is keeping the deer out of our hunting plots until it has a chance to established. We do use deer repellant products that work very well. Wish you the best for the coming season.
